Veterinarian

Doctors treating animals are called Veterinarians. Skilled in the science of understanding, identifying and curing animal ailments, they care for every step of an animal’s life, from complications in birth to geriatric care. In urban areas, Veterinarians use sophisticated technology, surgery and preventative measures to care for animals. On farms and in rural areas, veterinarians are highly valued for their ability to diagnose and treat the animals that keep business running.

Job Prospects

A Veterinarian may assure one or more of the following roles in his career. One can take to clinical practice where one works at preventing animal diseases, prescribing medication, inoculating, treating animal diseases, performing surgeries and even managing or breeding animals. Veterinarians can usually find employment at places ranging from animal hospitals, clinics, central and state government veterinary departments, state border check posts, zoos, wild life sanctuaries, mounted police squads, dog squads, private federations of hatcheries, poultries and meat processing plants to insurance and banking sectors financing  livestock. Impressive job opportunities in teaching and research also exit in government and private educational institutes. The average salary of a Veterinarian is heavily dependent on the branch of practice. It also depends on experience and specialization.

Eligibility

Similar to other spheres of Science and Engineering, aspirants must first compete for and clear the National or State level Joint Entrance Examinations. Besides meeting the cut-off percentage, students appearing for the competitive examination must have qualified 10 + 2 with subjects like Physics, chemistry and Biology. Bachelor’s in Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry is a 5 year degree course with rigorous theory, practical sessions and a compulsory internship program. Those who successfully complete the Bachelor’s Degree can get themselves registered for practice. Such candidates are also eligible to pursue the two years Master’s Degree (MVSc) which can be followed up by a Doctorate Degree in Veterinary Sciences.
