Social Worker

Unknown to many, a majority of the young tribe of social workers do not do ‘voluntary’ or ‘honorary’ work anymore, but in fact are paid and salaried professionals today. While social and political activism may be the main motive behind entering this sphere, better career prospects, greater scope for specialists, more opportunities in urban areas and promising professional growth are major factors attracting youngsters here.

Social Workers today address a host of new and old lifestyle and social problems that have come to the forefront today. These range from unemployment, empowerment and upliftment of women and girl child, literacy programs for the poor, coping with life threatening disease like cancer and AIDS, disability, drug addiction, domestic violence and abuse. In their capacities they often have to wear many hats at the same time, from that of a confidante, counselor, advisor, therapist, educator, administrator to manager and care taker. 

Job Prospects

Social workers are generally found aiding individuals, families or groups. There are others, employed part time or full time in central/ state government departments of family and social welfare, non-government organizations schools, hospitals, nursing homes, substance abuse treatment and rehabilitation centers and personal relations departments in factories.  Their work responsibilities include carrying out research, being involved in planning the developing policy, meeting clients, organizing awareness campaigns, arranging funding, promoting and publicizing their work using media and providing social services in varied spheres. The remuneration in this field will depend upon the organization in which one works for, one’s experience and the area of work. The pay package of corporate houses is more than that of government agencies. Salaries and perks are higher in International NGOs. The Social Workers who are running their own NGOs also earn handsomely.

Attributes

The sphere is one in which problems arise out of cause that are never superficial but very deep. Rectifying these needs time and hence it is important for the social worker to have the inherent desire to assist a person in difficult circumstances. For this one needs to be patient, calm, cool in times of crisis, polite, compassionate but not emotional, courageous, intelligent, sensitive to others needs and feelings, physically and mentally sound, disciplined, trustworthy and committed.

One should have an interest in helping people; have a sound academic background, thorough understanding of issues in hand, clear thinking, quick decision making ability, great communication skills and good organizing, leadership and liaising skills.

Eligibility

It is necessary to qualify oneself suitably in the field before entering it. Hence a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work (BSW) after qualifying 10+2, followed by a Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW) in the subject is vital for good job prospects. Those interested in taking up teaching and research assignments can pursue Ph. D degrees.
