Career in Medicine

Medicine is one sector where demand for qualified people is always high and is expected to increase multifold, as the changing lifestyle in India is leading to the onset of a number of “lifestyle diseases”. A doctor can choose to be a general practitioner with an MD, or can specialize in either treatment of particular illness (e.g. Oncologists specialize in treatment of cancer), type of patient (Pediatricians specialize in treating children) or specific organ (Ophthalmologist specialize in care and treatment of the eyes ). Doctors can also choose to specialize in pathology, which consists of carrying out the requisite tests on bodily samples from patients to diagnose the illness. Research is another option. Academic physicians share their skills and wisdom by teaching medical students and residents.

Job Prospects

Doctors can be employed by a variety of hospitals, both private and government operated. They can also opt to be part of the government medical service which runs clinics and treats patients all over India or the armed forces. Doctors can set up private practice as well. They can also become teachers at medical colleges and others can work with health maintenance organizations, pharmaceutical companies, medical device manufacturers, health insurance companies or in corporations directing health and safety programs

Eligibility

The eligibility criterion is 10+2 qualification with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Admissions are on the basis of an entrance test by the CBSE, held at the all India level for entry into all colleges run by the central and state government and local bodies. An MBBS degree is the basis requirement to become a doctor, along with registration with the Medical Council of India. The MBBS course is of four and a half years duration, followed by one –year internship. After completing the Bachelor’s degree, Doctors usually go in for a Post Graduate degree course (MD or MS). The MD or MS course is of three years duration. Synopsis of different medical specialties available are Anesthesiology, Dermatology, Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pathology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Radiology.
