The Indian Police Services (IFS) is primarily concerned with maintenance of law and order in the country. This is the premier uniformed Civil Service in the country. The officers are selected on the basis of professional merit as proven by competitive examinations and to which all Police Officers are professionally identified. An IPS officer works for both the central and state governments.

Job Prospects

The IPS officers are responsible for international security, public safety and maintenance of law and order. The various functional branches, related to security, where these officers work include the Crime Branch (CID) and Traffic Police. They also work with the various central police organizations viz. BSF, CRPF, ITBP and ICSF, on central deputation they also come to organizations like the intelligence Bureau and other and other security organizations under the cabinet secretariat like the special protection Group (SPG) meant for providing proximate security to the Prime Minister. They serve the state Government in various capacities ranging from Assistant Superintendent of police to the Director General of police. Promotions are time bound and increase in privileges is linked to it.

To arrive at a coveted position in IPS, one has to be really diligent and hard working. It requires attributes like self –discipline, patience, punctuality, commitment, self confidence and a burning desire to be at the top ladder of an important organization of the country.

Eligibility

To be eligible for becoming an IPS officer one must be an Indian Citizen, must possess a graduate degree from an Indian University or an equivalent qualification. Those in the final year of a degree course can also appear. The candidate must have attained the age of 21 years on 1st August of the year of the examination and must not be over 30 years of age on that day.
