The Indian army is responsible for defending the territorial integrity of the country against all external aggression and internal disturbances. During war, the Army is responsible for protecting the nation against external aggression and internal disturbances. During war, the Army is responsible for protecting the nation against aggression, whereas, during peace time, it provides aid to nt5he civil authorities in times of natural calamities and helps in maint4enance of law and order when required. The Indian army is mainly divided into Combat Arm4ed and Services. The Combat Arms are the Infantry, the Artillery, and the Armored Corps, the Corps of Engineers and Corps of signals. Services include Army Service Corps, Army Ordnance Corps, Army Postal Services, Army Medical Corps, Army Education Corps and Intelligence Corps. Combat Arms are responsible for actual combat, whereas, services are responsible to ensure continuous flow of required ordinance and supplies, fuel fo4 vehicles and tanks, and ammunition.

A career as a Soldier or an Officer requires a type of personality with quick reflexes and an unique blend of mental and physical alertness. The Services Selection Board (SSB) tries to find out a candidate has it in him to handle mental and physical pressure. Even the courses in the National Defense Academy (NDA) or the Indian Military Academy (IMA) test a candidate’s ability to handle pressure to an extreme.

Eligibility

  • National Defence Academy, Pune – To get NDA after class 11, one needs to clear  the entrance exam (conducted by Union Public Selection Commission), a five day Service Selection Board interview and medicals.
  • Indian Military Academy, Dehradun – there are four main entries to get into IMA:-
  • CDSE – In the final year of Graduation, one needs to pass the Combined Defense Services Exams (conducted by UPSC), clear the SSB interview, be medically fit to IMA provided the name is in the merit list.

The other is Non UPSC entries (There is no written exam. You are directly called for SSB interview):-

  • 10+2 Tech Entry – you can apply after your 12th Minimum aggregate of 70% in mandatory in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Total training period is of five years. (One year at IMA Dehradun and four years at Cadet Training Wings).
  • University Entry Scheme – is for those of you who wish to apply for Army in Pre-Final/Final Year of Engineering.
  • Technical graduate Course – Those of you who have Completed BE/B.Tech in notified streams can also join IMA through Technical Graduate Course. The duration of training is 1 year.
