Indian Foreign Service

The Indian Foreign Service [IFS] is the central and premier diplomatic service in our country. Members of the IFS the primarily represent the country in the international arena. The Indian Foreign Service deals with the country’s external affairs, including diplomacy, trade and cultural relations. It is responsible for the administration and activities of Indian Missions abroad and for framing and implementation of the Government’s foreign policy.

Job Prospects

An IFS officer can be posted in 160 odd Indian Embassies and Missions abroad. They can also be deputed to nations, UNESCO, World Bank, SAARC, etc. Back home, they can be posted in various parts of the country as passport officers. The appointment offers executive powers.

Eligibility

One must to be a graduate in any stream and an Indian citizen. The civil Services examination administered by the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) is used for selection of new IFS officers. Those in the final year of a Degree course can also appear. The candidate must have attained the age of 21 years on 1st August of the year of examination and must not be over 30 years of on that day. The civil services examination has three stages a preliminary examination, a Main examination and Interview and is known for being extremely challenging.
