A great start to a career in hospitality

It’s the right time to study hospitality as this is a boom time for the skill- heavy sector

The Indian hospitality and hotel management industry is doing quite well. People are traveling to India for medical treatment at various five star hospitals, they are coming here for destination wedding at heritage resorts and even the wellness tourism is picking up. This, in turn, has increased the demand for hotel management graduates by manifold which is not only confined to the bigger chains and hotels but has also moved to smaller budget hotels and independent hotels and restaurants. With a booming hospitality industry, it’s no wonder that hospitality studies too are on an upswing in India. In line with the demand, more than 500 institutions offer courses in hospitality, ranging from short- term to undergraduate, masters and above.

Unlike other streams of studies, hospitality offers diverse courses suited for diverse job roles. However, the catch is that one should opt for a course for which he or she has a passion. If you dream to become a chef, the first thing you should ask yourself is whether you love food from the bottom of your heart. So, choosing a course and an institution, which offers that course, becomes a bit tricky.

Hospitality is a promising career in India and a lot of young students are pursuing it. However, the profession demands a lot of efforts and hard work. Students shouldn’t join it merely by getting influenced by the glamour of it, rather they should make hospitality as a career only if they have certain basic characteristics, which determine whether they are cut out for it. These include innovative and creative, interactive ability to work for long hours under pressure and ability to learn and implement new concepts. Possessing these four basic characteristics is essential for becoming a successful hospitality professional.

A new entrant in the in the industry must focus on getting proper internship experience and exposure of all the operational and non- operational departments of hospitality.

Courses Overview

Every year, thousands of hospitality aspirants appear for the National Council of Hotel Management and Catering Technology (NCHMCT) Joint Entrance Exam in the hope of making it to a select list of top- rated hotel management institutes in the country. Those students who do make it to the institute have the option of selecting from seven different courses- B.Sc in Hospitality and Hotel Administration, M.Sc in Hotel Administration, PG Diploma in Dietetics & Hospital Food Service, PG Diploma in Accommodation Operation and Management, Diploma in F & B Service, Diploma in Bakery and Confectionary and Craftsmanship course in Food Production and Patisserie.

Career Avenues

Hospitality sector basically has four departments in which graduates work.
