There was a time when people asked for directions. Today, they switch on the GPS…

The technology behind GPS and various other functions stems from the Geographic Information System (GIS) that acquires and analysis information about our planet and its various resources as seen from space. Much of this spatial data comes from remote sensing platforms such as airplanes, satellites and radars. Every IT- based application has location reference as its base whether it is a navigation app, property, utility service or even agriculture. The field is expanding quickly. Apart from traditional application areas like parcel survey, preparing database for electricity and water utility and updating content for navigation app such as Google Maps, under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojna, the agriculture sector would require a large number of Remote Sensing experts to map and monitor crop fields through the various seasons, and initiatives like Smart Cities would also drive employment.
