Job Prospects

The Banking and Finance, government and public sector, Education and Communication and the business sectors (corporate firms) provide excellent opportunities for Economists. In the Banking sector one can purpose the role of a Commodities Broker, Financial analyst, Economic Forecaster, Securities Analyst and Investment Banker; in the government and public sector one can take up jobs as a Foreign Trade Analyst, Legislative Assistant, Public Administrator, Urban Planner and Financial Planner. In the Education and Communication sector there are plenty of jobs on offer like Professor, Journalist, Teacher, Educational/ Television Advisor and Information Analyst; in the Business Sector jobs on offer are of Market Research Analyst, Retail Buyer, Management Consultant and Strategic Planner.

Eligibility

You need a Master’s or Doctoral degree to become an Economist. You should major in Economics as an Under Graduate and take courses in related areas, such as History, Political Science and Law. You will also need some training in Mathematics, especially in the related fields of Statistics and Computer Science. Courses on offer are BA/B. Sc, MA, M. Phil, and Ph. D programs by select colleges in India: Delhi School of Economics Jawaharlal Nehru University, India Gandhi Institute of Development Research, Centre for Development studies, Hyderabad, Central University Centre University and Indian Institute of Technology.

  • BA/B. Sc (Economics): This is a basic degree offered both in an Honors version as well as a general degree.
  • MA (Economics): The Association of Indian Universities lists out nearly 269 universities and their affiliated colleges that offer this program. The courses are spread over two years and vary from 24 to 32 electives, depending on the university/institute.
  • 5 years MA (Integrated Program): This is a new kid on the block. Initially on offer at the redoubtable Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani, it is making waves in most of the Humanities departments of the IITs.
