Advertising is a form of communication used to persuade an audience (viewers, readers and listeners) to take some action with respects to products, ideas or services. Most commonly, the desired result is to drive consumer behavior with respect to a commercial offering. Advertising messages are usually paid for by sponsors through various traditional media including mass media such as newspapers, magazines, television commercials, radio advertisements, outdoor advertising, direct mail or new media such as websites and text messages. There are plenty of opportunities in this field as one can work as a Graphic Designer, media Planner, Account Planner, Advertising Manager, Sales Manager, Public Relations Director, Creative Director, Copywriter and Marketing Communications Manager. There are no limits to one’s earnings in this field.

Job Prospects

There is a variation in the kind of responsibilities different professionals handle within an advertising agency. Account Management professionals shoulder the responsibility of securing the best possible work from their agency to their client and that of getting profitable compensation for it from their client, for their agency. Account planners, on the other hand, focus on the agency’s strategic and creative thought process with the aim of grabbing consumer attention. The creative team works to create novel, innovative and effective advertisements, Media Planners execute advertising campaigns to enhance effectiveness and Market Researchers use research to gain insights into consumer psyche. Salary is generally not a constraint for suitable candidates in this industry. This will, of course, depend on the individual’s merit, qualifications and experience.

Prerequisites in advertising, however, differ in terms of specifics, depending on the department one joins. Account Management demands good interpersonal skills, strong business skills, excellent communications skills and statistical analysis capabilities. Account Planning calls for candidates with the ability to interpret and synthesize information and generate useful insights. The Creative department requires emotional maturity, strong visual concept, basic drawing and designing abilities. An agency’s Media Planning or Media Research department needs someone with an inclination for research and analysis besides strong computer skills.  

Eligibility

The ideal qualifications required for a job varies, again depending on the department of the agency one joins. Usually a formal qualification in Advertising, Journalism, English or Mass Communication is adequate, provided one has the talent. For those eyeing an Account Planning post, a Management qualification, in addition to exposure to subjects likes Psychology, Sociology and Cultural Anthropology proves advantageous.
