HOW TO ENTER THE PROFESSION

COMMON LAW ADMISSION TEST- CLAT

NATIONAL LEVEL ENTRANCE EXAMINATION- CLAT

The most preferred law entrance examination is the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). The entrance examination is administered by a National Law University (NLU) among 18 others which collectively from a CLAT Committee. An entrance test is conducted to shortlist candidates on the basis of ‘merit-cum-preference’ and the same is provided to each of NLU for admission to their Undergraduate (UG) and Postgraduate (PG) programmes. The test is conducted by NLUs on the rotation basis. The organizing body is chosen among the NLUs in CLAT committee by the year of their establishment.

CLAT has uniform format with total marks of 150. Subjects include Legal aptitude, general knowledge and current affairs, maths, logical reasoning and English language. For LLM courses CLAT has a different format. It contains objective type, short answers and essay with total marks of 120. There will be Negative Marking wherein 0.25 marks will be deducted for each of the wrong answers to multiple- choice questions.

CLAT result will be published with merit lists prepared on the basis of overall merit, gender-wise, state wise and reservation/special category wise.

ELIGIBILITY FOR LLB

A candidate should have obtained a Senior School/Intermediate (10+2) or its equivalent certificate from a recognized Board with not less than 45 percent marks in aggregate 40 percent in case of SC and ST candidates.

SUBJECTS FOR CLAT

English Including Comprehension

This section will test the candidates proficiency in English based on comprehension passages and grammar. In the comprehension section, candidates will be assessed on their understanding of the passage given, its central theme and meaning of the words used therein, etc. The grammar section will focus on correction of incorrect grammatical sentences, usage of correct preposition, filling of blanks in the given sentences with appropriate words etc.

General Knowledge and Current Affairs

The candidates will be assessed on their general awareness including static general knowledge. Questions on current affairs will test candidate’s knowledge on current affairs.

Mathematics

This section will test candidate’s knowledge on elementary mathematics i.e. mathematics taught up to class x.

Legal Aptitude

This section will test candidate’s interest towards study of law, research aptitude and problem solving ability. Questions asked may comprise legal propositions/principles and set of facts to which the said proposition/principle has to be applied to arrive at a most reasonable conclusion. Such propositions may or may not be ‘true’ in the real sense; however, the candidates will have to assume that the given propositions are true and then answer the questions in a befitting manner.

Logical Reasoning

The purpose of this section is to test the ability of the candidates to identify patterns, logical links and rectify illogical arguments. It will include logical reasoning questions such as syllogisms, logical sequences, analogies etc.

ELIGIBILITY FOR LLM

To be appearing for appearing in CLAT to obtain admission to LLM, a candidate should have obtained a LLB or equivalent degree from a recognized university with not less than 55% marks in aggregate and 50% in case of SC and ST candidates.

PATTERN OF CLAT FOR LLM ADMISSION

Candidates appearing in PG-CLAT 2023 are expected to have an understanding of graduation level. The CLAT LLM will have questions from common subjects of LLB programme. The details of syllabus are mentioned below.

  • Constitutional Law
  • Other Law Subjects, including Contract, Torts, Criminal Law, International Law, IPR and Jurisprudence.

TESTS FORMAT

It’s an online test conducted for two hours. The question paper comprises 200 questions of one mark each. 0.25 marks id deducted from the total score for every wrong answer.
