Choreographers can be termed as Dance Directors who are highly talented dancers themselves. They have excellent technical knowledge, original ideas, an understanding of music, acting, stage setting, costumes and lighting besides aesthetic sense to bind all these well. Choreographers are the real magicians behind successful dancers in theater, movies, television shows, serials, commercials or even community troupes.

Job Prospects

Choreography is a more advanced version of dance, where the professional often takes up responsibilities beginning from planning the steps, movements, expressions, costumes, music and lighting for a dance performance; auditioning & training candidates, instructing them during rehearsals and recreating traditional dances to re-inventing and innovating new ones. These may be done for professional dance companies, regional dance troupes, corporations, community centers, schools, colleges drama groups cultural shows television programs, movies, music videos, commercials, cruise liners fitness gyms, stunts in musicals and even circus troupes. Professional choreographers also work as Dance Instructors at schools and colleges or even turn Entrepreneurs with their own dance troupes and with their own dance troupes and institutes.

Choreographers take charge of instructing dancers and actors on how to perform for specific dances, whether these are for musical productions, operas, theaters, television, films, music videos, commercials or even live stage shows. The aspirant thus requires a thorough knowledge of dance techniques, a passion for dance and music, sound health stamina, high energy levels, a sense of rhythm and movement, agility and awareness about drama, speech and visual arts. Besides these, the candidate must also be flexible, disciplined, possess good leadership skills, communication skills, patience and grace.

Eligibility

Aspirants striving to make a career in this field must begin with a strong foundation in dance , whether it be classical or contemporary, which can be attained at any good dance school or even dance institutes set up by leading dancers. College or university degrees in dance are usually not required unless one is keen to teach dance in later life. Initially one can begin by choreographing college, community or regional dance groups, working as Assistants to established choreographers or in reputed dance companies.
