You can join the air Force in the flying, Technical or ground branches.

Job Prospects

One can be an officer in the Flying Branch, Technical Branch and Ground Duty (or Administrative) Branch. Post Graduates who enter the Air Force are not eligible for the Flying Branch but can work in the Technical and Ground Duty branches.

  • The Flying branch includes Fighter pilots who fly combat or fighter planes carrying ammunition and missiles; Transport Pilots fly planes which carry men and materials and Helicopter Pilots provide air support to a moving army, or are used for par dropping men and supplies.
  • The Technical branch includes engineering sections and is responsible for the Engineering Equipment and weapons system of the air Force.
  • The Ground Duty (or Administrative) Branch includes all the departments that provide Logistical, Meteorological, Educational and Administrative support to the Flying and Technical branches.

Attributes

Physical fitness is one of the most important prerequisites for joining the Air Force. Irrespective of the branch one applies for, one must fulfil the basic physical standards. One must be in good physical and mental health and be free from any disease/ disability, which is likely to interfere with efficient performance of duties.

Eligibility

The eligibility criteria for different branches of the Air Force are:

  • 10+2: One must have passed 10+2 with physics and Mathematics for taking the NDA exam conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). A rigorous 3 year training regimen at the National Defense Academy, followed by specialized training at the Air Force Academy is necessary before being commissioned as an Officer.
  • Graduate (Flying/technical/Ground Duty Branch)-one must be a Graduate or a BE/B.Tech in any discipline from a recognized university (with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level). One can take the Combined Defense Services Examination (CDSE), National Cadet Corps Special Entry or University entry Scheme to become an Officer in the Air Force.
  • Post graduate- Post Graduation degree/equivalent diploma in any discipline with minimum 50% marks in aggregate and all papers put together (Ground duty Branch)
